What Can I Do To Clear Up Acne Scars

In many cases acne is a mild or moderate condition which will disappear with time and treatment leaving behind no visible signs of its presence. In other cases however acne lesions and pimples will leave you with permanent scars.

True acne scars (as opposed to macules and other bumps which can remain after your acne has cleared but which will themselves disappear in time) are a permanent alteration to the structure of your skin caused by the healing process and arise largely from the creation during that process of fibrous tissue.

There are various different types of acne scar including:

Icepick scars. Icepick scars are small pinholes which form in the surface of the skin and are so named because they look like the hole made by a mountaineer in an ice face with a pick.

Boxcar scars. Boxcar scars are similar to icepick scars except they tend to be flatter on the bottom, rather than narrowing into a point.

Keloid scars. Keloid scars are quite different and are firm and extend beyond the site of the original injury. They are characterized by excessive production of collagen and frequently result in a shiny scar which is pink or red in color.

As with most things prevention is better than cure but, when that is not possible, then there are various standard treatments available for acne scars. These include dermabrasion (and a variation of this technique known as microdermabrasion), laser treatment, surgery and drug treatments.

The treatment that is correct for you will of course depend upon the nature of your scarring and your skin type and this is one area where you will need to seek the advice of a dermatologist.
