Do Trans Fats Play A Role In Acne?

Trans fats are found in a wide variety of foods and are added by manufacturers to increase the shelf life of foods and maintain their flavor. Essentially, trans fats are made by adding hydrogen to vegetable oil in a process known as hydrogenation. Trans fats are sometimes referred to as hydrogenated fats.

It has been long known that trans fats are bad for us and lead to increased cholesterol and heart problems, but is there a connection between trans fats and acne?

The simple answer is that there is no direct connection, but one side effect of trans fats is that they can produce inflammation which is in part what causes underlying acne spots to appear at the surface of the skin.

For this reason, it could be said that you should avoid trans fats in your diet to help to control your acne, but this should really be a side effect as eliminating trans fats from your diet to reduce cholesterol and minimize the risk of heart problems is a far more important reason for cutting out trans fats.
