The Different Types Of Severe Acne Medication

The type of severe acne medication which your dermatologist will recommend depends very much upon the particular type of acne from which you are suffering. When it comes to severe acne the condition is divided into 4 types:

  • Acne conglobata

  • Acne fulminans

  • Gram negative folliculitis

  • Nodulocystic acne

Acne conglobata is a severe and chronic form of acne vulgaris which often involves significant inflammation, deep abscesses, severe skin damage and scarring. The normally preferred treatment is isotretinoin (possibly accompanied by antibiotics) and treatment is generally required for a considerable period of time, usually a period of years. It is also common for your dermatologist to recommend scar treatment.

Acne fulminans tends to appear very suddenly with severe and highly destructive inflammation. This form of acne is also often accompanied by a fever and aching joints, especially the hips and knees. Corticosteroids and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medications are generally used to treat the immediate inflammation and isotretinoin is then sometimes necessary as a long-term treatment for the residual and continuing acne.

Nodulocystic acne is a rare condition characterized by often extremely large cysts. Although referred to as cysts these are not true cysts but are specific acne cysts which are inflamed nodules. Nodulocystic acne generally requires very aggressive treatment which might include isotretinoin and antibiotics, or intralesional corticosteroids.

Gram-negative folliculitis as its name suggests is inflamed follicles resulting from a bacterial infection which can arise out of long-term treatment with antibiotics. Treatment in this case is a combination of isotretinoin of antibiotics, although care needs to be taken in the choice of antibiotics as the condition itself is resistant to a significant number of antibiotics.

Acne Cream Retin-A Retin-A, or Retirides, is the brand name for tretinoid or vitamin A acid and is used to control, but not to cure, acne.
