What Is Meant By Acne Vulgaris

Acne vulgaris is simply the full name for what we commonly call acne - a very common skin disorder which is most commonly seen during the teenage years although it can extend well into the 20s and 30s and is not uncommon at older ages.

In most cases acne is reasonably mild and can be treated with a variety of over-the-counter medications but, in some cases, the condition can be severe and require the attention of your physician or a dermatologist.

The causes of acne are not fully understood although it is known that partly hereditary and it does certainly have a genetic component. It is also influenced by hormonal changes during both puberty and the menstrual cycle and is affected by changes in testosterone, estrogen and androgens.

Other causes are though to include stress, hyperactive sebaceous glands, the accumulation of dead skin cells, bacteria, skin irritation, the use of anabolic steroids and certain medications and chemical compounds.
