What Is The Best Cystic Acne Medication?

Nodulocystic acne (commonly simply referred to as cystic acne) is a fortunately uncommon but nonetheless serious form of acne and so you should consult your dermatologist for treatment options and not simply attempt to treat the condition yourself. One of the greatest dangers with cystic acne if it is not treated correctly is that is can lead to severe and permanent scarring.

The cysts which accompany cystic acne are formed when blocked oil glands which give rise to normal acne (acne vulgaris) burst and cause pus to accumulate in the surrounding tissue leading to often severe inflammation. Accordingly, the first line of treatment is often oral antibiotics to kill any underlying infection and/or cortisone to help to relieve inflammation.

In certain cases your dermatologist may also recommend a minor surgical procedure to drain your cysts and then flush them through with a weak solution of cortisone.

In stubborn cases of cystic acne your dermatologist may recommend the use of a very effective oral medication known as Accutane.
