Acne Scar Laser Treatment

For mild cases of acne scarring it is often possible to treat the problem either with cream or by using a chemical peel and, where this doesn't work, then the next step is to try a slightly more aggressive treatment such as dermabrasion.

In cases of more severe scarring however one commonly used treatment option is cold laser treatment.

There are two main types of laser treatment used for acne scars - ablative (resurfacing) laser treatments and non-ablative laser treatments.

Ablative lasers use heat to burn away the top layers of the skin and tighten the skin to make scarring less visible. This form of laser treatment is often used to treat keloids and raised scars and often requires repeated treatment over a period of months.

Non-ablative lasers (which are commonly referred to as cold lasers) do not attack and 'burn' the outer layers of the skin but use high-intensity light to reduce the production of sebum (skin oil) in the sebaceous glands and stimulate the production of collagen to act as a filler for depressed scarring. Cold laser treatment for acne scarring is becoming increasingly popular because there are very few side effects and recovery times are relatively short.
