What Are The Causes Of Cystic Acne?

Cystic acne (which is more properly referred to as nodulocystic acne) is an uncommon and severe cause of acne in which the blocked oil glands which give rise to normal acne (acne vulgaris) burst creating pus and inflammation in the surrounding tissue.

When it comes to the cause of cystic acne therefore we are essentially looking at the questions of what causes acne in the first place and what causes the blocked oil glands to burst transforming the condition into cystic acne.

The debate over just what causes acne has been raging for many years now and the simple fact is that we do not really know what causes acne, although there are a number of clearly defined factors which contribute to the condition.

One major factor is hormonal changes, and particularly an increase in androgens, which is why acne is so often seen during puberty and in women during the menstral cycle.

Another important element is the presence of a specific bacteria known as the P. acnes bacteria.

Acne affects individuals very differently and, while most people will develop a mild case of acne at some point in their lives, others will go on to develop more severe forms of the condition and, as yet, we really do not understand exactly why this happens.
