Blue Light Laser Acne Treatment

In some cases acne requires more advanced treatment methods either because of the severity of the acne or because of a desire to avoid the side effects from many acne medications. Modern advanced acne treatments offer an alternative which many people today find particularly attractive and among the most popular are light treatments.

For many years Ultra Violet (UV) light was used to treat acne as it was shown to have a beneficial effect in killing the Propionibacterium acnes bacteria which plays an important role in the formation of acne. However, since studies have shown that UV can increase the chances of developing skin cancer, UV treatment has became much less popular.

Today, one form of light treatment which is growing in popularity is blue light laser treatment. The main purpose of blue light therapy is to kill the bacteria which give rise to acne and patients typically receive 15 minute treatments twice a week for a period of about one month. The side effects of blue light therapy are generally mild and are normally restricted to mild swelling of the area being treated and some skin dryness.

Blue light treatment is often used for cases of mild to moderate acne which have not responded to other forms of treatment, as well as for more severe acne which produces nodules or cysts. Care needs to be taken however in some cases of severe acne as light therapy can occasionally make severe acne worse rather than better.
