Finding The Best Cystic Acne Treatment

Cystic acne (full name: nodulocystic acne) is an uncommon form of severe acne characterized by cysts which can be very large and occasional measure several centimeters in diameter. Although not strictly cysts in the true sense of the word, cystic acne forms when blocked oil glands burst open to produce inflammation and pus in neighboring tissue.

As with any severe form of acne, cystic acne should be treated by a dermatologist and three common forms of treatment are used.

1. Oral medication using antibiotics (such as erythromycin, tetracycline, minocycline and doxycycline), a birth control pill (for women) or cortisone.

2. Surgery to drain the cysts followed by flushing of the surgical area using a dilute solution of cortisone.

3. The use of topical warm (but not hot) water compresses.

When these three treatments have been used for several weeks and prove ineffective then your dermatologist may recommend the use of Accutane. This is an extremely effective treatment for many people, although it is not recommended for women who are pregnant or contemplating pregnancy.

Cystic action should be treated immediately to minimize the potential for scarring.
