Acne Cream - Differin

Differin is the brand name for a retinoid-like drug known as adapalene which controls, but does not cure, acne. Pimples typically take 6 to 8 weeks to form under the skin and, during the first weeks of treatment, Differin may cause these pimples to come to the surface and thus appear to make your condition worse. It will take between 8 and 12 weeks before you begin to see any real benefits from the treatment.

Differin comes in two forms, a cream at a strength of 0.1% and a gel at strengths of 0.1% and 0.3%.

Differin gel (0.3%) is a relatively new formulation and is designed for people with mild to moderate acne which is not responding well to the original lower strength formulation. It is an odorless preparation, which is also both oil and alcohol free, which helps to clear the skin of the accumulation of skin cells which block the pores and thus helps to clear existing acne and also to prevent the formation of new spots.

Differing gel (0.1%) is the original strength formulation of the gel and is again designed to help to clear mild to moderate acne.

There are a number of possible side-effects which you may experience with Differin including dryness, redness, itching, burning and peeling. These side effects will also increase with exposure to sunlight (including sunlamps) and so you should keep your skin covered if you are out in the sun or should use a suitable high factor sunscreen. Exposure to wind and cold should also be avoided.

Differin cream (0.1%) is an emollient cream which is quickly and easily absorbed and which is designed for people with sensitive skin who are likely to experience the side effects associated with the gel to a higher degree than normal.

Differin cream and gels are prescription medications.
